Ricardo is a descendant of the Great Yyu, a.k.a. the first king of China.
He lives in Massachusetts and enjoys experiencing all kinds of cultures around the world.
After obtaining his doctorate in science, he became fascinated with time-travel. As an aspiring writer, he loves to write timetravel fictions that blend fantasy, science, and real history together.
In 2017, he published his debut time-travel novel D r a g o n T o m b , the first book of his TLR (The Last Resistance) pentalogy. This history science fiction series starts from World War II, during which a young archaeologist discovers the true origin of Chinese civilization and saves the world from Armageddon.
What sparks Bollywood Invasion/what inspires you to write?
The music from the Beatles and the colorful culture of India.
As a lifelong Beatles fan, I stumbled into a YouTube video in 2013. In that video, a tribute band played Let It Be, my favorite Beatles song of all time, with traditional Indian instruments. That very night, I had a strange dream. In my dream, I woke up as a singer in 1958 India, which I was always fascinated by. What are the odds?
The next morning, I scribbled down my lingering memory of the dream. Then, a question came to me. If John Lennon had been born an Indian—with the same talent—could he still conquer the world?
This is the very question that I kept asking myself during my writing of Bollywood Invasion. Something extraordinary had to happen if the Indian (British) Invasion was to take America by storm, as the world back then was not even close to be as multi-cultural as we are today.
Five years later, here I am, ready to share my dream with the world and pay my tribute to the greatest band in my mind.
How long did it take you to write Bollywood Invasion?
It took me five years to write Bollywood Invasion to my satisfaction.
Anything motivates you to write Bollywood Invasion?
The music from the Beatles and the colorful culture of India.
What intrigues you about India?
This incredible country isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it certainly is mine. In its chaos, there’s a certain order and great vibrancy. India has a long history, rich culture, and omni-beauty. Every state of India has its own and unique landscape, which will keep people standing still in awe.
Have you ever visited India?
No. Although I have never been to India, I have made friends with many wonderful Indian people, who are proud of their heritage. Many character names in Bollywood Invasion are borrowed from my Indian friends, thanking them for giving me the chance to learn about this great nation.
Why do you name the book Bollywood Invasion?
In the process of creating this unique story, I wanted a band from India to storm the world, particularly the USA, as the real Beatles did in 1964. In Bollywood Invasion, the protagonist, Raj Scindia, formed the first student Rock’n Roll band in India and conquered the music world as a representative of Bollywood. In my mind, they should be called the Bollywood Invasion by the American press as the Beatles were called the British Invasion at the time.
What research on India did you do in your writing? Did you read a lot about Bollywood for your novel?
I am a visual kind of guy. I did a lot of internet research on India and watched many Bollywood movies.
Any influence from the Bollywood movies in 70s?
Although Lennon was an icon in 1970, Bollywood Invasion is a 21st century story and I believe it should be told in a fresh 21st century mindset. Therefore, I relied on more modern Bollywood movies, namely Three Idiots and Slumdog Millionaire, to help me understand Bollywood. By the way, Three Idiots is my favorite Bollywood movie of all time.
Who are your target audience?
I believe Bollywood Invasion will attract audience from many different background, Bollywood fans, Beatles fans, timeslips fans, just to name a few.
Did you speak to any Bollywood directors/actors?
No, I did not have the chance to speak to any Bollywood yet. I believe I will have the opportunity when Bollywood Invasion make to the big screen, which will be a huge hit globally. This unique story can attract audience from many different background, Bollywood fans, Beatles fans, just to name a few.
Will Bollywood Invasion be available in Hindi?
Not yet. I believe the English version of Bollywood Invasion will be available on Amazon India website. I also welcome Indian Publisher to collaborate with me to publish this book in Hindi for the readers in India.
What inspires you to write, in general?
My dreams. All my stories are based on the dreams I have had at some point of my life. I don’t know how I can explain this. Many of my dreams are bizarre. Sometimes, I even woke up with sweat on my back and felt like I just experienced a life time in my dream.
What kind of writer are you?
I am an outliner writer; there is no question about it. Before I officially start writing a book, I’d like to have the ending of the story in my mind. Strangely, all my novels are based on bizarre dreams I have had at some point of my life. As a habit, I like to type down my dreams the morning after.
As far as the character development is concerned, I typically don’t think too much about them in the beginning. During my writing, I always imagine myself as one of my characters, talking to them, listening to them, putting myself in their shoes. As a result, they naturally come to life as the writing progresses.
What type of writer are you?
My favorite author is George R.R. Martin. His A Song of Ice and Fire would certainly keep me up all night reading. The most valuable lesson I learned from him is that the most beloved characters should die once in a while.
I am an established scientist with a passion of writing time-travel novels. Without a recognizable name and not many resources, I don’t want to wait too long to share my fascinating dreams with the world. Therefore, I decided to self-publish first. As the world starts to accept me as a quality fiction writer, I will certainly consider publishing with a more traditional publisher.
Do you plan to write more themes about India?
Certainly, I already have a sketch about an American Born India boy with disability who chooses to play Basketball for the Indian national team and wins India the Olympic Gold medal.
Can you share a bit about your past projects?
In 2017, I published my debut novel Dragon Tomb, the first book of a pentalogy called The Last Resistance. This history/science fiction series starts from World War II, during which a young archaeologist discovers the true origin of Chinese civilization and saves the world from Armageddon.
Kirkus Review calls it “An epic and inventive Far East, space-invasion reimagining of World War II…” Book trailer is available at https://youtu.be/qbs7k1nXAv4 and the book is currently on Amazon.
What is your next project?
My next project is to finish Resurrection, book two of the pentalogy. After that I will try to finish another India themed fantasy as I mentioned earlier. My plan is to bring one book to my readers a year.
About the Book
Readers who love the music of the Beatles and time-travel won’t want to miss BOLLYWOOD INVASION. The story starts from modern-day Brooklyn.
Sixteen-year-old John Palmieri is living an average life until one day when he wakes up as the prince of a royal family in India, thirty-five years before he was born. Suddenly, he finds himself with riches and power beyond his wildest fantasies. Brooklyn is readily forgotten. Life becomes a constant stream of debauchery, coming to a stand-still only when he meets “the one.” However, love doesn’t come easy. He must become a better man, a pursuit ignited by his memories of Beatles songs on his iPod…
With a plot that moves unexpectedly, and popular Beatles songs beautifully integrated with the story development, readers will be engrossed in a new reading experience along the way. This enlivening read will take readers on a journey from Brooklyn to India, then England, and finally back to New York City, where the story started.
Bollywood Invasion will be officially released on September 18th and will be available on Amazon, Smashwords, and other book stores.
His next project is to finish Resurrection, book two of the pentalogy.
